New York, 1976. Au pied du World Trade Center, King Kong est étendu, loin d'être sans vie. Une équipe de médecins et de chercheurs de l'Institut d'Atlanta se mobilise pour le sauver, redonnant à ce colosse ses fonctions vitales.
Cependant, l'état de Kong reste préoccupant. Signes de faiblesse préoccupants... Il est urgent d'envisager l'implantation d'un cœur artificiel.
Dans le même temps, un aventurier intrépide nommé Hank Mitchell fait une découverte incroyable au cœur des jungles de Bornéo : une immense gorille femelle nommée Lady Kong. Il décide alors de l'amener à l'Institut pour rejoindre son compagnon blessé.
